LEARN supports family literacy through a variety of programs. See basic information below, and have a look at our newsletter for times and dates.

All programs have free transportation if needed for families.

Explore Outdoors

  • 6 Week FREE Program in the springtime

  • For parents and children aged 1 to 5 years of age

  • Parents and children are given the opportunity to experience the joy of nature and learning together

  • Outdoor activities will include gardening, scavenger hunts, pool parties, stories and songs

  • Field trips to parks and other outdoor spaces in and around Medicine Hat

Growing child, growing parent

  • 12 Week FREE Program

  • For families with children 0-5 years

  • Parents can attend with or without their children

  • When the families first arrive they engage in a Rhyme Time program that promotes oral language development through stories and songs

  • Children are provided quality child care programming

  • Children are provided with quality child care

  • Parents are offered techniques for improving literacy skills, strategies to help parents promote literacy with their children, parent education and assistance for adults to transition to further learning

  • Parents and children then come back together for a FREE lunch

  • Offered in various locations, times and days a couple of times a year

  • 10 Week FREE program

  • For families with children 0-5

  • Parents can attend with our without their children

  • When the families first arrive they engage in a Rhyme Time program that promotes oral language development through stories and songs

  • Parents and children are then separated into individual programs

  • Children are provided with quality child care

  • Parents are offered techniques for improving literacy skills, strategies to help parents promote literacy with their children, parent education and assistance for adults to transition to further learning

  • Parents and children then come back together for a FREE lunch

books for babies

  • 4 Week FREE Program

  • Parents and their children from birth to 12 months of age

  • This FREE program encourages parents of infants to share books with their babies

  • It supports all families in developing early literacy and language experience and promotes healthy family relationships

  • Each family that attends receives a FREE snack and a FREE book each week

  • Parents will learn what kinds of books are best for babies

  • Parents will learn techniques of how to read to young children

No Place like home

  • 10 Session FREE Program

  • Home visitation program and the 10 sessions are scheduled at a date and time that works for the Literacy Builder and the individual families

  • For families and children 0-5 years of age

  • A trained Literacy Builder shares ideas about learning, reading, and parenting strategies that gives parents tools that will help them to teach their children

  • Play based program that builds on the strengths within the families

  • This program is for refugee families

  • A trained Literacy Builder works with the refugee families to help the parents and the children learn English in a meaningful way

  • The Literacy Builder also works on helping the families navigate parenting skills and life in Canada

cooking up fun

  • FREE 4 week program

  • A cooking program that focus on learning English in a meaningful way through reading and writing out recipes

  • Our program also focuses on speaking English through a rhyme time and everyday conversations

Literacy and Learning

  • FREE 8 week program, open to the clients of Musasa House.

  • This program helps parents to develop the skills so their children can be successful.

  • The participants of this program create Learning Portfolios that help the parents to develop their own success in life.

  • This is a program for adults only and the children are cared for by the staff at Musasa House.

  • This program is offered twice during the year.

Families Learning Together

  • FREE 10 Week Program.

  • For families with children 0-5 years of age.

  • Families spend quality time leaning together doing activity centers, crafts, games, playing together, stories and songs

  • The focus is on literacy skills for parents and their children as well as other developmental skills

  • Guest speakers and fields trips

  • Meet friends in the fun, engaging and FREE program

  • Offered twice during the year

Literacy Building Blocks

  • Free 6 Week Program

  • This program is open to parents with children in the Early Learning Program with Medicine Hat School District #76

  • Parents attend the program for 15 minutes alone and then their children join the program

  • The parents and the children then engage in learning stations that work on literacy skills for children and parents

  • The focus is on vocabulary building, story comprehension, conversation skills, print knowledge and sound awareness

  • FREE snack is provided to all families

Imagination Alive

  • FREE 10 Week Program

  • This intergenerational program is for seniors living with dementia, living in a care home and high school seniors

  • This innovative program pairs teenagers and seniors to develop art and stories

  • At the end of the program their stories will be made into a book and/or video and presented to the seniors

  • The teenagers are taught leadership skills as they work with the seniors
